The Creative Power of Sleep: Why a Good Night's Rest is Key to Innovation

We're in the middle of a series looking at how we can position ourselves to have collisions of inspiration. If you have no idea what we're talking about, check out our other videos, and you'll probably learn something from them, I hope. Today, we are looking at the third way that you can position yourself for those collisions of inspiration, and that is get some sleep. There was a study done in 2018 that looked at how memory in sleep boosts our creative problem solving. And, what they came up with is the fact that we need to sleep for a decent amount of time.

We actually need both our REM sleep and our non REM sleep because they do something really cool and totally different when it comes to our inspiration and how we connect ideas together. In our non REM sleep, we are making connections between things. We're coming up with the rules or the gist of whatever that day was or whatever happened, within our life. We're making those connections in the solid form. In our REM sleep, we're doing something a bit different, a little bit more creative, where this is when we get a little bit more novel and unexpected connections occur.

So we actually need both. We need those moments where we can take those thoughts going on in our brains or those things that we've experienced and order them, and then also have moments where we can just, like, go a little bit crazy and and see what creative things come out of that. So go to sleep. Sleep for a decent amount of time. It'll help you be creative.
